The administrative centre of Liguria region, Genoa was an important Byzantine city in the past that can be compared to such powerful cities like Venice and Pisa. Hometown of Christopher Columbus, Genoa unfortunately could not see him take up his most adventurous journey from its shores. Instead, he sailed from Spain, and the Spanish monarchs financed his trip. Over the times, however, powerful Genoa started waning. It did not attract as many tourists as the rest of the Italian cities did. However, recent years brought some changes and the bustling city was once again a major commercial port. Recognition for its revival was for Genoa its assignment for 2004's European City of culture. The city celebrated its naval history with a new Sea and Navigation Museum called - Calata de Mari, and a paint face-lift was given to the port side buildings.
